CCID Virtual Professional Development Program- Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding: Applications for the Classroom and Professional Life

Objectives: 

In two 2- hour workshops community college professionals will explore applied means of incorporating peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and diplomacy skills with students.

Participants will:

  • Be introduced to major conceptual frameworks for conflict resolution and peacebuilding in academic settings
  • Consider past initiatives that been developed at the community college level (many of which are documented in Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource (USIP Press 2013)
  • Explore recent approaches that have been developed and have been successful in community colleges
  • Examine how these approaches can incorporated into courses
  • Working in an experiential way, attendees will participate in activities/models that demonstrate how peacebuilding and related areas can be integrated into traditional classroom, student activities, and technological enhanced environments
  • Participants will leave the workshop with tangible approaches/activities they can use with students


Program:

The program will be divided into 2 two-hour segments. 

In the first 2-hour program participants will be introduced to conflict resolution and peacebuilding approaches, models used in community colleges, and examples of how incorporation can take place in curriculum and use in professional life. 

Date: June 4, 2026, 1-3 pm CT


In the second 2- hour program participants will share models and projects they have developed based on guidelines provided in the first session. 

Date: June 17, 2026, 1-3 pm CT


Outcomes:

Participants will take back to their colleges tangible assignments that they can use with students in a range of applications.

Biography:

David J. Smith is an educator focusing on the fields of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and humanitarian action.  He is the president of the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education, Inc., a 501c3 not-for-profit that offers experiential learning opportunities for students and professionals. He was a senior program officer and manager of national outreach at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He has taught at Georgetown University, Drexel University, American University, and currently at the Carter School at George Mason University. He was full time (tenured) faculty at Harford Community College where we has awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant to teach peace studies and conflict resolution at the University of Tartu (Estonia).  David is a recipient of the William Kreidler Award for Distinguished Service to the field of Conflict Resolution given by the Association for Conflict Resolution. He has published Peace Jobs: A Student’s Guide to Starting a Career Working for Peace (Information Age Publishing, 2016) and Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource (USIP Press, 2013).  He directs the National Community College Peacebuilding Seminar and is president of the Community Colleges Chapter of the Fulbright Association.  David is a graduate of American University (BA), George Mason University (MS, conflict resolution), University of Missouri (Grad. Cert., positive psychology) and the University of Baltimore (JD).
